Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment (GMBA)
activities 2003 - 2004




Dear colleagues,


It is time again to give you a brief update on the Global Mountain Biodiversity (GMBA) activities in 2003, and wha will be planned for 2004:


... The Moshi-La Paz Research Agenda on "Land use effects on tropical and subtropical mountain biodiversity" was published recently in the DIVERSITAS newsletter No. 5. It is the first result of two GMBA workshops in Moshi, Tanzania 8/2002 and La Paz 8/2003. A synthesis book will be published next year. ... GMBA became a major scientific partner of the Convention on Biological Diversity (Montréal) for the theme "MountainTechnical and Technological Advice meetings 8 & 9. Download at: http://www.biodiv.org/doc/meetings/sbstta/sbstta-09/official/sbstta-09-12-en.pdf


... GMBA coordinated and contributed to Chapter 27 (Mountain systems, lead by Ch. Körner) of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (see http://www.millenniumassessment.org).


GMBA has scheduled the following international workshops in 2004 on specific mountain biodiversity themes:

... "High alpine grazing and biodiversity"-Symposium, European Grassland Federation meeting, 21-24 June 2004, Luzern, Switzerland 


... "Functional significance of mountain biodiversity" at the ESA annual conference, Portland, USA, 1-6 August 2004


... "Mountain biodiversity and slope stability", Symposium at the International conference on eco-engeneering, 13-17 September 2004, Thessaloniki Greece
