The Institute for
Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) has a vacancy for a Principal
Technical Advisor
full-time job reference code PZ FNWI 04-1014 (A-048) for
the programme for the conservation of the biodiversity, Paramo and other fragile
ecosystems in Ecuador, for 12 months, preferably starting 1 June
2004
IBED-UvA participates as an advisory institute to the Ecuadorian
Environmental Organization EcoCiencia, which is executing a DGIS (Dutch Agency
for International Cooperation) financed programme that aims at the participatory
conservation of the biodiversity of this Megadiverse country, focussing
especially on the management of fragile ecosystems, like the High Andean Páramo.
The programme has four components: policy analysis and development,
investigation, support to local stakeholders and communication/-awareness
rising. IBED-UvA supports the general coordination of the programme through a
Principal Technical Advisor and collaborates directly to the investigation
component with an associate researcher in geography.
Function
The main responsibility of the Principal
Technical Advisor is to advise the General Coordinator of the Programme and the
component coordinators about the execution of the programme, in this way
supporting the effective achievement of the Project Results. He/she will also
supervise the work of the Associate Researcher. Finally, he/she will maintain
contacts with other researchers/staff of the Universiteit van Amsterdam to
support other University activities in the Andes (max. 10% of time
investment).
His/her specific activities are:

Support the General Coordinator of the Programme in strategic decision making
-
Support the General Coordinator of the Programme in the establishment and
maintaining institutional relations on national and international level
-
Specifically concentrate on the international relations of the Programme and
facilitate the participation in international networks and consortia.

Support the General Coordinator of the Programme in the elaboration of
operative plans and technical reports
-
Act as representative of the Programme and its coordinator when necessary.

Provide technical advise to the policy component of the programme with the
establishment of institutional relations and analysis of technical sustention of
legislation
-
Provide technical advise to the local stakeholders support-component with the
establishment of institutional relations and methods and technologies for
sustainable management of natural areas.

Provide technical advise to the communication component with methods and
deliverables for the communication strategy.

Supervise the work of the Associate Researcher (IBED-UvA) in the
investigation component
-
Support the organization and assist to methodological, technical and
strategic workshops for the programme staff and its related organizations.

Promote and coordinate the collaboration (strategically and operative)
between the programme and other IBED-UvA activities in the Andes
Requirements
-
The candidate should be a researcher with extensive experience in tropical
countries (preferably the Andean Region), and with a background in University
research as with conservation and development projects in the Tropics
-
The researcher may be specialized either in social or biophysical disciplines
-
He/she should have preferably a PhD (dr.) degree on a relevant theme or at
least a M.Sc. (drs.) degree with a minimum of five years experience in tropical
countries
-
He/she should have up-to-date knowledge of the main nature conservation and
investigation issues in the Andean region, including the important stakeholders
-
Experience with advisory tasks to nature conservation/rural development
projects in the tropical Andes is preferred, and an international network of
conservation and development organizations is welcome

Fluency in Spanish and English is a must; knowledge of Dutch is preferredFor
the execution of this work, the candidate will have to live in Ecuador.
Appointment
Appointment for this post-doc position
is for a period of 12 months and the salary is in accordance with the university
regulations for academic personnel. The salary will be 3.145,- euro a month. In
Ecuador, the candidate will be supported with a visa with Diplomatic Status.
