"The World Conservation Monitoring Centre" se encarga de proveer información para la formulación de políticas y acciones que ayuden a conservar la vida en el mundo; es el soporte en tema de políticas de la UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), cuyo objetivo es colocar información de diversidad biológica en manos de los tomadores de decisiones a nivel mundial y en todos los sectores.

UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre

INTRODUCTION

The UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre provides information for policy and action to conserve the living world.

Their programmes concentrate on species , forests , protected areas , marine , mountains and freshwaters ; plus habitats affected by climate change such as polar regions . They also address the relationship between trade and the environment and the wider aspects of biodiversity asessment .

UNEP-WCMC, in partnership with the public and private sector, has commenced work on Project Proteus to develop a knowledge management system that will enable easy access to wide-ranging information and analytical services about the environment and the living world.

An exciting and challenging opportunity exists to lead the Centre’s work on protected areas, including management and development of the World Database on Protected Areas, which provides significant input to a range of international conventions and programmes, as well as to the activities of major international conservation NGO"s and the private sector.


RESPONSABILITIES WILL INCLUDE

Overseeing future development and implementation of UNEP-WCMC’s work on protected areas in line with the Centre’s overall strategy, the needs of the user community, clients and partners.
*

Strengthening links with existing partners and seeking new partnerships for joint activities and projects focussing on the development of information, assessment and policy tools and products to support decision making, including for key publications such as the UN List of Protected Areas and indicators to support the Millennium Development Goals, the 2010 biodiversity indicators and other similar initiatives.

Overseeing the development and management of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) in full consultation with the WDPA consortium, with the aim of:

* Developing and implementing a strategy to restructure the WDPA, making it more accessible and function as a core database with links to other information sources.
* Developing and improving links with national protected area agencies with a view to increasing the authority, quality and availability of protected areas information.
* Initiating a more decentralised approach to information management, so that the WDPA relies increasingly on data inputs at the national level.
* Strengthening the ability of the Centre to undertake automatic and manual quality checking of the data and its access at the global level.

* Developing project proposals and undertaking fundraising activities to secure funds for future work on protected areas, working closely with the WDPA Consortium Partners and others.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The successful candidate will have broad experience of protected area issues and policy at international level and an understanding of how information and information tools can be used to support conservation action. A proven track record in programme development, management, fundraising and marketing / communication is essential, together with fluency in written and spoken English.

Salary: £32,000 - £37,000 (under review)
Location: Cambridge, UK.
