The Sustainable Development of the Camelid Sectors in the Peruvian Altiplano

The Altiplano is one of the poorest regions in Peru and its environment one of the harshest to live in, both for humans and livestock. For the majority of families, camelids represent an important source of income and food security. This Masters thesis, ‘The Sustainable Development of the Camelid Sectors in the Peruvian Altiplano' by Ingrid Mocaër (LUMSA University, Rome) considers the role that species of camelids can play in spurring development and enhancing the livelihoods of poor Altiplano communities. It also summarizes the key issues that need to be addressed to improve of the production chain, from the zootechnical to the marketing aspects, including the range of fair trade Camelid products that can be promoted.

Estudio: EL DESARROLLO SUSTENTABLE DE LOS SECTORES DE LOS CAMÉLIDOS EN EL ALTIPLANO PERUANO

El Altiplano es una de las regiones más pobres de Perú y su medio ambiente, uno de los más difíciles para la vida humana y la cría de ganado. Para la mayoría de las familias, los camélidos representan una fuente importante de ingreso y de seguridad alimentaria. La tesis de master sobre «El desarrollo sustentable de los sectores de los camélidos en el Altiplano peruano» (en inglés) de Ingrid Mocaër (Universidad LUMSA de Roma) considera que los camélidos pueden tener un rol importante para incentivar el desarrollo y para mejorar las condiciones de vida de las comunidades pobres del Altiplano. Así mismo, la tesis resume cuales son los aspectos más importantes para el mejoramiento de la cadena productiva, a partir de la zootécnica hasta el marketing, incluyendo el margen para la promoción y la comercialización justa de los productos derivados de los camélidos.
