International Potato Center
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Regional Research Fellow: Integrated Crop Management
Ref: 08-14 AE/IR/SSA

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking an integrated disease management specialist with skills and experience in participatory research for potato seed development and production to serve as a Regional Research Fellow. The candidate should be committed to using research for development in a complex cooperative environment of research and development partners.

The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research organization with a global mandate to conduct research on potatoes and sweetpotatoes, sustainable management of natural resources and urban agriculture. CIP’s vision is to contribute from its areas of expertise to the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in particular those goals that relate to poverty, hunger, child and maternal mortality, and sustainable development in rural and urban systems. CIP has its headquarters in Lima, Peru with staff and activities in locations across Africa, Asia and Latin America. CIP is a member of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research, a network of 15 research centers mostly located in the developing world and supported by more than 60 donor members.

The Division: CIP has over 30 years of experience producing research outputs related to the main constraints to potato and sweetpotato production. The Integrated Crop Management Division conducts research to address the lack of quality planting material for potato and sweetpotato in developing countries in order to improve formal and farmer-based (self-supply) seed systems, which in turn become a key vehicle for the dissemination of new improved varieties. Research is also conducted on agronomic management, which plays an important role for the production of both seed and ware potatoes and sweetpotatoes, for increasing the efficiency of scarce resources for crop production, and for safe-guarding the environment from possible negative effects of agricultural activity. The Division also focuses on the development of control components for diseases and insects respectively; for this purpose, basic research to understand the biophysical principles of pests is conducted at a preliminary stage; this knowledge is transformed into tools and management components in a later stage. An additional area of research is directed at developing participatory methods and strategies for assessing management components in response to specific needs and socio-economic conditions of farmers. The Division focuses on the development of general principles and methods for crop management and looks at scaling-up and out strategies giving priority to capacity building of NARS scientists.

The successful candidate will
:
• be a citizen of an Eastern or Central African region;
• have a PhD in an agriculture-related field, preferably related to crop protection;
• be an accomplished and innovative researcher with at least five years’ research experience in the design and implementation of on-station and on-farm experiments related to potato management, particularly focusing on the areas of late blight and bacterial wilt control, and seed management;
• possess proven skills in applying sound statistical analysis of research results and writing scientific papers;
• have experience in working with participatory methods and in providing training to farmers and NARS;
• have demonstrated success in working with multi-disciplinary teams and partnerships in collaborative proposal writing and research implementation.

Conditions: The employment contract will be for three years. The position will be based in Kabale, Uganda. CIP offers a range of benefits for this position in addition to exoneration from, or compensation for, local income tax.

Applications: Applicants should apply by email, sending a cover letter summarizing their relevance to this position, a full C.V. and the names and contact information of three referees knowledgeable about the candidate’s professional qualifications and work experience to Rosario Marcovich at cip-recruiting@cgiar.org. The reference name of the position should be clearly marked on the subject line of the email message. Screening of applications will begin on 15 July 2008 and will continue until the post is filled.

All applications will be acknowledged; only short listed candidates will be contacted.
