The district Chitral lies to the extreme north of Khyber Pukhtunkhaw Pakistan between 35° 12’ – 36° 50’ N Latitude and 71o 2’ – 73° 53’ E Longitude covering an area of 14,850 km2. The elevation of Chitral varies from 1,200 m in Arandu to 7,780 m at Tirich Mir. By virtue of its unique biological and cultural contrasts the district stands tall among all districts of KP province. Despite its remoteness and difficult terrain, the district offers ideal prospects to community development through sustainable management of the Natural Resource Base.
The district is rick in faunal and floral diversity and proper research to explore and document the available Natural Resource Base of the district will play a key role in bringing the district at par with developed district of the country.
However, concrete efforts have never been undertaken to harness this important potential of the district. This is partly due to lack of relevant research institutions and partly lack of political will to link development with proper research.
Mountain Society for Research and Development has been established with the objectives of linking development with research; and creating and maintaining political will for such initiatives in the district and beyond.
Besides, the Mountain Society for Research & Development is committed to conserve mountains ecosystem of Chitral and explore avenues for sustainable development.
The Society was founded in 2009 by local professional from diverse field, including foresters, sociologists, community activists and field biologists. The underlying aim was to explore the hidden potentials of the district and ensure prudent use of resources for development of local communities.
VISION:
To ensure sustainable management of natural resources of the Province in general and District Chitral in particular, to eradicate poverty and reduce pressure on resources through identification and introduction of alternate sources of livelihoods.
3. MISSION:
MSRD is dedicated to make Chitral a prosperous place of living where people have their right to a life of dignity and where resources both natural and manmade are managed and sustained in an equitable manner through research.
4. APPROACH:
The Society adopts a participatory, self-help, self-sustained, self-reliant and purely scientific approach for research and development.
5. OBJECTIVES:
1. Conservation of the upland ecosystem through active local community/stakeholders participation.
2. Promote Research in context of Mountain biodiversity and other associated problems.
3. To initiate development activities to boost the livelihood of the mountain dependent communities.
4. To promote mountain culture diversity and eco-tourism.
