Two recent studies offer complementary accounts of the ways that glacier retreat and other impacts of climate change have displaced indigenous people from their communities in the Peruvian Andes. One describes the people who have left as refugees, the other as migrants. Both emphasize the seriousness and apparent irreversibility of this large population movement Teófilo Altamirano’s book,Environmental Refugees: Climate Change and Involuntary Migration, draws on methods and concepts from anthropology to explore displacement from a glacier region in central Peru. It links glacier retreat...

A new Yale-led study offers a new conceptual framework for understanding the biogeochemistry of watersheds. The framework combines hydrologic and biogeochemical theory to test well established concepts in watershed ecology.   The paper, published in the journal Ecology, suggests that heavy weather events, though infrequent, cause an inordinate amount of organic material to bypass headwater systems, pushing them downstream into larger rivers, coastal waters, and inland basins.   This phenomenon can have profound ecological implications on the quality of water systems worldwide and the...

Threats to global food security present a challenge that most agree is only getting worse. The possibility of achieving a food secure world without sustainable development is highly debated in policy and academia. A recently published article in the journal of Public Health Nutrition explores this notion along with the evolution of food security from the 1970s to present day. In an analysis of more than 80 articles, the authors posit that one cannot exist without the other. This conclusion sheds light on previously unidentified challenges to food security, such as rural transportation,...

As the effects of climate change become increasingly apparent, restoring landscapes to ensure that they – and the communities that rely upon them – are able to deal with these changes is becoming a global necessity. Countries are coming together to increase knowledge and understanding of climate change and to build capacity to implement mitigation and adaptation strategies.  Despite increasing efforts, global emissions continue to rise. Dealing with the effects of a changing climate requires adapting to these changes and simultaneously mitigating the causes. Mitigation focuses on...

The Rio Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, brought the principles of sustainable forest management to the forefront of the quest to safeguard tropical forests and the habitat and carbon reserves they contain, while also providing for the social and economic needs of the people who depend on them. But a team of scientists is now questioning whether sustainable forest management might not be as effective as believed, based on their analysis of timber concessions in the Central African nation of the Republic of Congo. Specifically, they argue that SFM may not have led to...

Placing a value on ecosystem services in a way consistent with national accounts, many say, is a critical step towards sustainable ecosystem management. Systems of National Accounts (SNA) used in many countries already incorporate some of the benefits society obtains from ecosystem services, such as food production. However, SNAs exclude many benefits due to the challenges that accounting for all ecosystem services represent, e.g. the feasibility of valuing the capacity of ecosystems to generate services and its flow in a monetary fashion. Ecosystem accounting seeks to provide ways in...
