This working paper has been written by scientists from different research divisions of the International Potato Center (CIP). It describes a methodology based on the use of high-resolution satellite images and spectrordiometry to gather data to construct reliable statistics on sweetpotato cropping areas. The pilot study was conducted in a region located in eastern Uganda, where sweetpotato is cultivated in two cropping seasons. The results suggest that the tested method substantially improves estimation of cropping areas compared to traditional statistics based on field surveys and censuses.
