Moving Mountains, Moving Youth!

Monday, 4 January, 2016 - 14:00

A presentation about mountain ecosystems and sustainable development was delivered during the Eleventh Conference of Youth that was held in Paris last November.

Each year, a few days prior to the beginning of the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, youth aims to understand the process of global climate negotiations, reinforce their capacity of action and obtain new skills and knowledge in climate and environmental topics. Thus, they organize each year the Conference of Youth (COY) in the city where the COP will take place.

The Eleventh Conference of Youth took place from the 28th until the 30th of November in Paris, France. Several debates, conferences, workshops and other activities related to environmental topics were organized during the three days of conference. In this aspect, the roundtable “Mountains, Climate change and gender” took place.

This session had as an objective to present the importance of mountain ecosystems for sustainable development and how they are currently being threatened by climate change and other global changes. Moreover, the debate presented the current international legal framework for mountain ecosystems as well as the importance of women for sustainable mountain development. The role of youth for their preservation and awareness was argued as well.

“Mountains, climate change and gender” finalized with a roundtable that discussed the current adaptation techniques that are being implemented in different mountain areas and how informal activities affect these ecosystems.

COY11 had the participation of more than 1000 young people and 50 organizations. The conference was held simultaneously in other cities around the world.

COY12 will be held in Morocco where the next COP will take place.
