Invitation for Mountain Future Conference in Kunming, 1-4 March 2016
It is with pleasure that we invite you to Mountain Futures, an innovative conference on mountains in the Anthropocene, to take place from 1–4 March 2016 in Kunming, Yunnan, China.
The conference is different in that it seeks to collect and nurture seeds of a positive Anthropocene, a grassroots approach to tackling the climate problem and environmental issues in the global mountains. Instead of focusing on the destructive effects of human activity in the mountains, we solicit, explore and develop visions of mountain futures that are socially and ecologically desirable, just, and sustainable in a human-dominated Anthropocene. Some of these will be radically different from the way things are done now.
Mountain Futures also encourages a breezy look at the Anthropocene, and therefore asks participants and especially young scientists and field practitioners to present their seeds in attractive and creative ways, such as, but not limited to, visual art and documentaries.
The main themes of the conference are global assessment of climate change, dynamic sustainability, mainstreaming the marginalized, and water governance. In these four themes, we aim to bridge the gap between scientific research and development on the ground and therefore also scientists and stakeholders from all over the world with an interest in mountains. We strive to contribute to the global Future Earth programme, a 10-year international research initiative; as well as the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their associated targets with a lens for mountains.
We are excited to see you in Kunming. Please confirm your attendance for the Mountain Futures conference now on our website http://mountainfutures.org/signup, and register your seed of change at http://mountainfutures.org/seeds.
