Mountains and water, key topics for the sustainable development, are emblematic themes in COP20

The next December, as part of the Conference of Parties (COP 20) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), “Mountains and Water” are going to be one of highlighted themes by the Peruvian Government in “Voices of Climate”, offering expositions and sharing spaces to communicate and raise awareness over the climate change.

Mountains provide water, food, minerals and recreation, and are life scenario and culture conservation. They give us fresh water for 50% of world population and represents 27% of Earth’s land. However, compared to its great value and treasure for humanity, mountains are vulnerable to climate change.

As part of the COPs0’s activities, Peru have organized a meeting space called “Voices of Climate”, that will be open in December since 1 to 12 from 10am until 10pm. This space reflects the diversity of initiatives working against climate change and focusing in five themes, one of them is Mountains and Water. 

The Mountain and Water Pavilion has the aim to highlight ecosystems and mountain population and the water, as key elements to the sustainable development in the framework of climate change. It has the following objectives: (1) to link relevant actors and to generate a common knowledge on challenges and opportunities of the sustainable development of mountain and water address climate change; (2) to identify effective solutions to challenges and opportunities, to promote a collective actions, and to mobilize financial resources; (3) to link discussions and thoughts among UNFCCC members and to talk over the post2015 development agenda; and (4) to promote the knowledge among these topics.

There are four sub-themes under the Mountains and Water Pavilion: Water, Glacier and Basins; Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Food Security; Linking Climate Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation for the sustainable mountains development; and Services and Goods Mountains, Investments and Beneficiaries.

The Mountain and Water Pavilion is an initiative to join a set of public and private institutions and the international cooperation to COP20 and the legacy towards the national climate agenda.
